Really Busy

I’ve been ridiculously busy lately.

The software I’ve been working on for the last 6 months finally went live last Monday. I’ve been flat out for the last few weeks, and since Monday I’ve been madly trying to fix bugs, add missing features, and get everything working smoothly and nicely. I was up at 6:30 am four days last week (!!!), and I’ve had less than two hours sleep a few times in the last 10 days.

Last Thursday I spent the whole night dealing with some bugs related to prices, and adding some special support for discounts. It was a good night (I drank a LOT of Red Bull), and once I’d finished the implementation I spent a lot of time testing everything – poring over individual lines of a pile of invoices to make sure that everything was perfect.

I’ve spent the last couple of days doing some significant changes to one part of the system, and I’m close to the end of that – but at this point I’m feeling really drained and worn out.

I’m hoping that once this is in and running on Wednesday that things will settle down a bit so that I can get some semblance of order back in my life. Hopefully I’ll be able to balance things a bit better, and have time to work on the rest of the system, patch minor bugs if they’re discovered, and spend a bit more time with Sherry.

In a way I’ve been really happy spending as much time as I have on this project. It’s been challenging and I’ve learnt a lot about myself, the way I work, and what I need to do in future to make things run more smoothly.

I’ve been a bit disappointed that we’ve had a few problems and that I didn’t do better. However, once I clear this hurdle I think I’ll be able to use the whole experience to improve everything from now on. I hate it when I don’t do something as well as I think I could have, but at the same time there’s been a big learning curve, and I don’t think there’s much more I can do than learn from it and do better next time.
