The boy and I are happily playing cricket inside. I bowl the ball at his bat and then he whacks it back to me.

“Galen, could I please just watch this on TV for a bit?”

starts watching tv

THWACK – the ball hits my nose.

“OW!”

LAUGHTER

“OK, I can play cricket again now.”

“No, watch TV.”

And just like that, the boy spent the next 10 minutes throwing a cricket ball at the side of my head.

Hunting for echoes

The little man runs ahead – glancing sideways, staring down alleys.
Walls and ceilings and darkness close together.
Eeuuughhhhh he grunts.
Eeuuughhhhh he grunts again.
He turns around. Eyes searching.
Ladies loo. Hmm, ha!
Glint in the eye!
EEUUUGHHHHH he grunts again.

Cornflakes

I stumble downstairs at 7:45 after the boy has been up since 6am.

“Daddy Galen cornflakes”
Did you eat cornflakes for breakfast? Were they yum?
“Yeah! Eat all up”
Wow. Are they all in your belly?
stares at me like I’m an idiot, then points to face
“Nooo. MOUTH.”

People fly planes

2009

2009 was a good year.

I love my job, I love being up near Bristol, and my wife and son make me happier than anything.

But most of all it’s been about this amazing little guy.

Here’s to 2010 being the year of family, runs, and software releases.

Off floor adventure triking

How to go off floor adventure triking. Lesson 1 – First, get trike off floor onto sofa like so:

Lesson 2 – Join trike on sofa:

Lesson 3 – Board trike, taking care to keep wheels perching precariously over the edge of the sofa:

Lesson 4 – Once on board, look behind before reversing. Spot potential hazzard and stop just in time:

Lesson 5 – Decide reverse isn’t all its cracked up to be. Go full speed ahead along the sofa instead:

The boy

It’s now just over 18 months since Galen popped into the world.

Among other things, he loves watching videos of tractors on YouTube.

That’s my boy.

Hair

On Friday we took Galen to get his hair cut. It had grown a little bit too long.

Sitting on my lap, he was fine to start with.

But soon became unimpressed.

It was all worth it though. We think the result is pretty adorable.

Hello 2009

And so ends another year.

2008 was one of the hardest, but also most rewarding, years of my life.

Some of my favourite moments:

Helping catch Galen as he was born in the sitting room or our home
Seeing mum and Nick again
Every moment with Galen
Scoring my first 100 in cricket
Writing and releasing another software application for a business and seeing a significant positive impact to that business
Our trip to Belfast to see a certain group perform

Some of my least favourite moments:

Spending a Saturday night saving our property from a flood
Losing a cricket match when the other team needed 32 runs from the last 8 balls
The “summer”
Some of those nappies

There were a lot more positives than negatives.

As expected, Galen has turned our lives upside down. In 2009 I hope that I can restore a little bit of balance to my life.
